About NIE

The Deseret News established its "Newspapers in Education" program (NIE) twenty-five years ago to assist schools, teachers, and parents in developing future readers who can use the newspaper to enrich their own lives and participate responsibly in their community.

PROGRAMS

The Newspapers in Education program provides a number of educational services each year to help educators teach from the Deseret News, including:

  • free newspapers for education
  • credit classes
  • monthly educational sections
  • a library of teacher guides
  • special programs
  • serialized stories
  • activities for elementary, middle, and high school students
  • curriculum resources
  • links to additional teaching materials

EDUCATIONAL VALUE

Not only does the Deseret Morning News provide valuable information on a wide range of topics daily, it also can be used as a tool for teaching numerous skills to various age groups and in many different disciplines. The newspaper is easily available, still free of charge or low cost for education, can be reused, and is fun for students. It helps students connect classroom lessons to the real world around them and develop a positive and relevant lifetime reading habit.
