School Newspaper

Have you ever wanted to work for a newspaper? Newspapers overflow with continually changing advertising and information, and are an updated guide to our dynamic world.

Chances are, your school is looking for a handful of talented and energetic kids who could help run a student newspaper.

Look at all the different jobs which go into the production and circulation of a newspaper:

  • Editors - editors are perhaps the most essential members of a newspaper staff. While editors usually have an advanced degree in English or Journalism, they work very hard to correct grammatical, historical and other mistakes in a story before it is published. They protect the credibility of the newspaper and its staff.
  • Journalists - journalists almost always have an advanced degree in Journalism from universities throughout the world. They research and verify information on subjects ranging from current events to sports, entertainment, history and lifestyles. Journalists work with their editors to create a comprehensive and complete story which is later published in the newspaper.
  • Photojournalists - newspapers hire photographers to put faces to the stories that are printed in the newspaper. There are three types of photographers at a newspaper: staff, stringer and freelance photographers. The photographer takes pictures of several events around the community and works closely with the photo editor to place it in the newspaper.
  • Marketing and Promotions - staff members involved in the Marketing and Promotions departments of a newspaper create opportunities for the newspaper to involve itself within the community. They select events to sponsor, such as a marathon or sports event. In return, the media exposure supports an increase in circulation, which is important to the success of the newspaper.
  • Web Designers - Web designers are also important staff members of a newspaper. As a result of the technological age that we live in, many people prefer to read their newspapers on the internet, from a home or business computer or even a cell phone! Web designers take the print version of the newspaper and make it interactive and customized. They provide an online version of the newspaper for readers to easily find the news that they want, at the click of a mouse.
